Florida Home Maintenance Checklist: Fall Edition

Sure, Florida doesn’t do “fall” like Vermont—we get less pumpkin spice and more humidity. But this season is still a great time to prep your home. Here’s your quick checklist:

✅ Clean those gutters (yes, we have them here too)

Leaves may not be piling up, but pine needles, oak leaves, and random storm debris sure do. Add in squirrel stashes and raccoon “gifts,” and you’ve got a clog waiting to happen. With peak hurricane season on the doorstep, clear them out before the next tropical downpour tests your drainage.

✅ Service your HVAC before winter “cold snaps”

Our AC units never really rest—they just go from sprinting in August to long-distance jogging in October. Schedule a tune-up now. It’ll keep cooling efficient while also making sure your heat is ready for those two or three nights when temps actually dip into the 40s. (And yes, Floridians will complain about “freezing.”)

✅ Trim trees before the wind does it for you

A comedian once said, “It’s not that the wind is blowing, it’s what the wind is blowing.” Trim back branches near your roof or power lines, thin out the moss, and take a hard look at any trees leaning a little too close to the house. Proactivity is way cheaper than roof repair.

✅ Bonus Tip: Check your storm kit & insurance docs

Hurricane season doesn’t end until November 30. Use this time to refresh your storm supplies (water, batteries, meds) and double-check your insurance paperwork. Trust me—reading your coverage now is a lot better than arguing with it later.
